About. |
HistorySt Mary's Church is a Grade 11 listed building which was built in 1876 and listed in 1947.
It's design is by Austin and Johnson and it is made of coursed squared sandstone with ashlar plinth, quoins and dressings; It has a Welsh slate roof with stone gable copings. the font used for baptisms is octagonal and made of stone. We still have a high quality rood screen in place which commemorates Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee; many rood screens have been removed. And the Gothic style pulpit is World War I memorial. We have two War Memorial plaques on the walls, one listing the names of local people who lost their lives in World War I and the other with those who died during World War II. These names are read out during our annual Remembrance Sunday service. Unusually, we have stained glass windows behind the altar which have have real people's faces incorporated in them in remembrance of loved ones. |
